DEPORTATION
Entire Jewish communities were taken from their ghettos en masse and transported by rail to the concentration camps littering the landscape of Europe. They were told that they were being “deported” from their homeland. Forced into railcars; actually cattle cars, they were uprooted and taken away forever. Eighty people forced into a railcar that could fit thirty. They barely had air or food, no physical space and no privacy for the days of torturous travel.
I wanted my “Mound” to symbolize that trip from despair to death.
