Sh'ma Yisrael
In the beginning of the creative process I wanted to intertwine the most important prayer in Judaism with the "Mound."
Sh'ma Yisrael is the tenant of Judaism. Hear O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One! I wanted this painting to say Hear O Israel: look what they have done to us! As it says in the next part the prayer, "Set these words, which I command you this day, upon your heart. Teach them to your children; speak of them in your home and on your way, when you lie down and when you rise up." I want the Holocaust to be remembered in the same way.
When the work was finished it said even more to me. It reminded me that this is the prayer that almost all Jews use when their life is in danger. How many went to their death with these words on their lips?
